This mural depicts 20 individuals from throughout Dodgeville and the surrounding area. The story behind the mural started in 1989, when Kenny Berg, Wisconsin's 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year, remodeled the old Kroger Store and founded The Courthouse Inn. A large lighted sign was placed on top of the building to help people see its location. However, large maple trees on the main street made it difficult for tourists and visitors to the area to see either the sign or the restaurant. The City Council and Chamber of Commerce were approached with a request that the trees be trimmed, allowing for greater visibility. After numerous meetings, the decision was made to trim the trees. Years later, the trees were still blocking the sign. They had not been cut down! This mural depicts the "what if" of the trees being cut down with a chainsaw -- shown by one of the policemen as "Exhibit A". Through the painted windows of the courtroom one can see three stumps. Perhaps the wood was used for building the defendant's box? The long-time dispute over the trees on the town's main street (Iowa Street) has been brought to new light, with every detail at its finest, on this beautifully painted mural, a classic artwork for today and into the future.
